Obituary

Dunning, John “Jack” Alcott-
1944-2020
Jack Dunning touched the lives of countless students, and changed the lives of many, during his years as a professor of psychology at Algoma University. In retirement, he became a well-known potter whose work – both practical and playful – has found a place in many local homes. He leaves a huge empty spot in the lives of his family and friends. Survived by Paula, his wife of 54 years; children Erica (Darren), Robin (Andrea) and, Galen (Katharina); grandchildren, Gavin, Aidan, Blake, Delaney, Quentin, Stella, and Nina; and his brother, Peter (Lucy). Due to COVID restrictions, there will be no public celebration of life at this time. Donations in his memory can be made to Sault Area Hospital Cancer Care Fund or the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to O’Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 215 St. James St, 705-759-8456.

The last time i seen Jack was at Montreal River , I loved his face pots so much I commissioned Jack to do two large face pots The King and Queen of all pots , i also purchased three other Face Pots from Jack at his shop on Echo River where he told me of his wintering grounds in Mexico , I found it very interesting .Jack also liked to hear my adventures of old mines and my rock & mineral finds . I will miss you and our interesting conversations . Tom Kimsal

Paula,
So moved on reading about Jack's passing. He was my mentor
and my Psychology Prof. at Algoma UC, in the mid 1970's.Lessons
for life, were abundant and served up by Jack in such a wise and
masterful way. His lessons were profoundly apropos and guided me
while navigating a winding pathway in to the future.
Saddened I will never see,nor talk with him again...but still vividly
recall his humour and enthusiasm, and who could ever forget "SIMSOC".
I have often quoted Jack's truisms through the years....and will continue
to regale them.
Sylvan Valley has lost a champion.
Sincerest condolences ,

Dear Paula: I am sorry to read of your Jack's passing. Although I only met him briefly a few times at the Sylvan Circle tours I felt I knew him through your book and blogs; and I am delighted that I was the successful bidder on one of his fall photos that he donated to the Art Gallery. He certainly is remembered by many as a fine gentleman. My heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family at this difficult time. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Georgina Naccarato
