Obituary for William Ernest Fick

On October 15, 2022, Will Fick passed into Jesus’ loving arms surrounded by his family at Arch Hospice at 12:45 p.m., after a months-long illness, ultimately diagnosed as Stage 4 lung cancer. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Cain (Mathieu), of Waterloo, grandchildren, Patrick and Ruth Cain, his son, Anthony “Tony” Fick (Julia Keeping/Andre LeBlanc), of St. John’s, Newfoundland. He also leaves his grand-nephew, Kyle Peeren, who lived with him for many years. He was 65 years old, having just celebrated his birthday with close family the day before. His family wishes he could have lived a longer healthy life but are grateful for an end to his suffering. Will’s biggest disappointment was that he would not be here to continue participating in the growing-up years of his precious grandchildren, Patrick and Ruth. While his family and friends grieve this loss, they are thankful for his new beginning in heaven, where God will wipe away every tear. They are also thankful for the efforts and care of the doctors and nurses at Sault Area Hospital and especially the staff at Arch who made his last two days comfortable.

William “Will” Ernest Fick was born on October 14, 1957, to William Ernest and Ruth Anna Fick (both deceased) in Tillsonburg, Ontario. He had five siblings from Ruth’s first marriage: Lois Stover, Geraldine Powers, Edith Garwood, Ruth Infurnari, and George Powers. Ruth is the last surviving sibling.

Will graduated from Glendale High School in Tillsonburg, Ontario, in 1976, before completing his B.Sc. at the University of Waterloo in 1980, followed by his M.Sc. degree in 1983. While in university, he met the love of his life, Carol Marie (Burkholder), who died July 21, 2021, after nearly 40 years of marriage. They worked together to foster their faith over a lifetime, by working for others and building community both locally and abroad.

Will often talked about his two faiths. First, his Christian Faith and hope in Jesus, and also his faith in the scientific method. He did not believe they were mutually exclusive and enjoyed learning about many topics. Will worked at various jobs throughout his career, including teaching at Universities of Saskatchewan and Waterloo. He also worked at the University of Guelph creating online course content. Most recently, he worked at Great Lakes Forestry Centre.

Will was loved by and will be missed by his sisters, brothers and sisters in law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Wills body is resting at O’Sullivan Funeral Home.
