Obituary for Stanko Subic

Subic, Stanko-
It is with great sadness that the family of Stanko Subic announces his passing at Hastings Manor,
Belleville, Ontario, on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at the age of 88 years. Stanko was the husband of
the late Vera Subic, father of Betty Subic (Gabriel Flamminio) of St. Catharines and Diane Coates (Tim
Coates) of Belleville, Ontario. He leaves behind his grandchildren, William, Andrea, David, Daria, and
Mark.

Stanko Subic was born in 1932 in Skofja Loka, a small mountainous village in Slovenia. He was the
second oldest of 8 children. In his 88 years, he survived a war in his home country, loss of family, and
poverty. He escaped through Austria where he apprenticed as a mechanic and then eventually took a
ship to Halifax. He settled in Sault Ste. Marie where he spent 35 years working at Algoma Steel as a
hydraulic mechanic and the best coffee maker at the plant. He outlived Vera, his love of 50 years. He
had very strong beliefs and was sure to voice his opinion but was the first to offer food and hospitality to
many. He loved his two daughters, his sons-in-law, and his 5 grandchildren with all his heart. His
passions were his friends, “the camp”, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Olympics, and travelling the world.
Letting his grand kids “dip the finger” in his wine glass was always his way. Stan, for many years,
enjoyed a glass of wine, a good steak, and maple walnut ice cream with fresh blueberries, drizzled with a
shot of brandy. For someone who had a rough start in life, he lived it by having a certain simple joy of
family, close friends, and good food. Thankfully, the suffering Stan experienced in the last two years is
over. Stanko will be greatly missed.

A family and friend visitation by invitation only will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at the
O’Sullivan Funeral Home (215 St. James St, 705-759-8456). A funeral mass will take place at the Croation Catholic Church Our Lady of the Highway on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 with Father Veselko Kvesoc OFM, with the interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Vincent Place Food Bank and Sault Area
Hospital Foundation (payable by cheque or online) would be appreciated.
