Obituary for Shirley Anna Rutledge (Ryckman)
RUTLEDGE, Shirley (nee Ryckman)
April 12, 1936-October 6, 2023
Unexpectedly at her long-term care facility in Hornepayne, ON, on Friday October 6, 2023, at the age of 87.
Survived by her husband Eric Rutledge. The most amazing and loving mother of Dottie Crosson (Kirk), and the best Gramma to Keir and Finn. My boys were her world.
Daughter of the late Elgin Ryckman and Helen Korpanai. Sister of the late Carol Ann Wenmaekers. Mom waited 13 years for her little sister Carol Ann, she lost her way too soon. Special aunt to John (Anne) and Hannah. Mom was blessed with many nieces and nephews on the Rutledge side. She especially adored her niece Lori Eaket, who remained in her heart and memory, even as the dementia stole so many memories.
Mom shared a lifelong friendship with Sally Botting who was like a second mother to me, and we lovingly call her Gramma Sal.
My Mom touched so many lives. She was a firecracker who would tell you exactly what she was thinking. She had a heart of gold. She waited 43 years to become a mother. She devoted her life to me. To say she’ll be missed isn’t enough. The world is missing the most incredible lady and my heart is forever torn.
Our deepest thank to her doctors and nurses these last few years. Especially the amazing staff at the Hornepayne Community Hospital. Her stay there was only for four months, but she had the most fantastic care. Our minds were at ease.
Until we meet again Mom. We love you!
There will be no services and cremation will take place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District Alzheimer’s Society or the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society. (Payable by cheque or online).
