Obituary for Sandra Diane Dickson (Hewitt)

DICKSON, Sandra Diane (nee Hewitt)

My dear Aunty Sandra passed away rather suddenly on July 30th, 2023, a month after turning 78 years old. She had requested that no service be held, which was honoured.

Although I have known her all of my life, it has been only the past few years that I had the pleasure and opportunity to spend a lot of time with her, got to know her much better and experience and enjoy the familial love that can exist between an Aunt and a nephew.

She was my late mother’s baby sister, but met and married an air force man from Indiana, Al Terzarial, and moved to the United States where they raised my two cousins. She returned to Canada in the 1980’s after a marriage breakup and met and married a Sault Ste Marie man, the late Richard Dickson.

Aunty found a career path as a counsellor for those with substance addictions and retired along with Richard so they could enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family, until his untimely death in 2014.

A few years ago, my father experienced some tough senior stage illnesses, but Aunty vowed to help him in any way she could and moved into his house with him. It was during this time that my more frequent visits allowed me to spend quality time with my Dad, but also, with Aunty. She worried about him, often more than my father felt was necessary, however, they did enjoy (not always!) each other’s company. And certainly, seemed to enjoy my company and that of my siblings and others when they happened. For her support and commitment to my father’s well-being, I am eternally grateful.

Aunty was funny, sharp, and a source of great stories from the time she was a little girl growing up. She loved animals, most especially her little dog Buster during her later years with Richard. She would sit outside at Dad’s house and become distracted in conversations only when someone walked by with a dog, or when an outdoor cat would walk the neighbourhood. Aunty loved flowers, a passion she grew up with as her father always had a flower garden.

Sandra leaves behind her two sons, Andy Terzarial and Tony Terzarial (Julie) as well as five grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Kendra, Timmothy and Delana. And four great grandchildren Stella, Adaline, Autumn and Evelyn.

She is also survived by her brother Fred Hewitt (Linda). She is predeceased by her siblings, Doreen Gravelle (late Lawrence), June Zuke (late Mike), David Hewitt, Marie Bertolo, Barb Tuckett (Blair), and Wayne Hewitt. Her many numerous nieces and nephews will hold her close in their hearts.

She is also survived by many close friends, most especially Jean Demoray, as well as Debbie and her husband Ken. And of course, her much loved Mindy, the cat.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society. (Payable by cheque or online).
