Obituary

GODIN, Ralph Robert Ronald (Bob)-

With much sadness we announce the passing of Bob at the Sault Area Hospital on Saturday, October 31
after a short battle with leukaemia and pneumonia. He was 77. Father of Peter (Britta) of Cold Lake,
Alberta, and Colin (Amanda) of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Son of late Ralph and Emma Godin. Brother
of late Claudette Particelli, Carol Grandbois (Gerry), of Riverview, New Brunswick, Suzanne Chiasson
(David), late Gary, and Denis, (Laura). Grandfather of Esme of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Uncle to
several nieces and nephews. Bob was a man who understood the pleasure and freedom of solitude. He
used his time in ways he saw fit in order to foster his mind and spirit. Over the years Bob amassed a
library of books. He loved literature, particularly the writings of James Joyce, and he kept hundreds of
notes with favourite quotes that impressed and moved him. Bob wrote poetry, mainly free-verse and odes, where he would express his thoughts and concerns. He published a book of poetry years ago and was working on a second book when he passed. Bob enjoyed studying languages, Spanish in particular, and he had aspirations of traveling in Europe again. In his middle years, Bob loved fishing, hunting, canoeing and camping with his sons. He loved the outdoors and held a deep concern for the natural world and man’s place within it. The power and grace of a skein of geese could lead him to contemplate the profound mystery of Life. To quote Joyce, “Your battles inspired me – not the obvious material battles but those that were fought and won behind your forehead.” You will be missed.

A private family funeral service will be held at O’Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 215 St. James Street. Burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Memorial donations to Canadian Mental Health or Sault Ste. Marie Public Library would be much
appreciated by the family.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses on 3C at SAH for their patience, care and dedication, and particularly
Dr. Bowen, Dr. Fera, Dr. Hill and Dr. Booth, who took the time to communicate with the family. Their care and concern for Bob was much appreciated.
