Obituary for Michael Barry Rains

Suddenly at home on his beloved St. Joseph Island with Dianne and Tom by his side. Predeceased by his Mother Mary Emilie (nee Nelson) and Father Orrell Rains. Beloved brother of Tim (late Seana). Father of Ryan Rains (Daughter Kayla), Derek Rains (Son Jacob), all of Edmonton AB., and Kristyne (Gus) Minor (Sons Noah, Maveryck, and daughter Reverie) of Sudbury ON. Michael leaves behind his heartfelt love and caring wife of 22+ years Dianne Holt, her daughter Marnie Cennamo (Son Cayo) of Switzerland and son Thomas Holt of St. Joseph Island ON. Survived by Aunts Lois (nee Nelson) Thibodeau and Roberta (nee Rains) Boyer, many cousins, and his good friends Mitch Nystrom and Joe Zammit both of BC. Predeceased by many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

Michael served as a Private (Radio Operator) for the Canadian Armed Forces from 1971 until his honourable release in 1974. Michael was awarded the United Nations Emergency Force Medal for his service in Egypt.
After Michael’s service in the Armed Forces, he started his family and career with Canada Post in Calgary Alberta. He later relocated back to the Algoma District.

Michael had a love for sports and was a standout hockey player. He was very honoured to coach his son Ryan through his hockey years. Michael was proud of his Metis Heritage. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his time out west hunting Elk and Mule Deer with his sons and his good friend Joe Zammit.

Dianne would like to offer a special thank you to the following for their support and love of Michael through his battle with cancer and a stroke that left him with memory challenges, Tim Rains, Tom Holt, Shelly Nelson Bond, and Clayton Bond.

Many thanks to our exceptional Home Care Nurse Amy. Thank you to all of those who provided care during the years of Michael’s illness. With special mention to the Urology staff at the Sault Area Hospital.

As per Michael’s wishes there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
