Obituary for Maria Gioia (Perri)

GIOIA, Maria (nee Perri)

Beloved wife and best friend of the late Guido Gioia passed away in her 87th year at the F.J. Davey Home on March 27, 2021 after a long battle with Dementia.

Maria was born in Calabria, Italy where she met Guido and then immigrated to settle in Canada. She was a special mother who was deeply loved by her children, Angela Ibrahim (late Fadi) and Frank Gioia (Rose). Maria had much strength and instilled in her children’s strong values that have served them well. Maria was a cherished Nonna (Grandmother) and will be forever remembered by all her grandchildren - Adonis Ibrahim (Rachel), Fadia Ibrahim (Robert), Johnny Ibrahim (Marilyn), Julian Gioia and Adrian Gioia. She was also Great Grandmother to Lorenzo, Frankie, Mario, Rafael and newborn Chiara.

Maria was the dear daughter of the late Pasquale and Teresa Perri. Her siblings included brothers late Antonio, late Francesco, sisters Assunta, late Carmelina and sister-in-law late Rita Felice. Maria also had many special relationships with a large extended family as well as her nieces and nephews in Canada, United States and Europe.

Maria was an incredibly kind-hearted lady who touched many lives. In the original west end neighbourhood of “Little Italy”, Maria’s door was always open and welcomed friends and family for a fresh cup of coffee. She was a talented seamstress and worked tirelessly at her trade from a young age in Italy where it often paid for her room and board as well as doing favours for friends and relatives.

In nursing home care for many years, Maria moved those who assisted her with quaint and lively ways of communication. The Gioia family extends “The Biggest Thanks” to all the thoughtful Personal Care Workers and Professional Nurses and Staff of the F.J. Davey Home particularly the 2nd Floor Cedar division. The tender care, sensitivity and compassion for Maria will always be appreciated and will never be forgotten by her family. You are all truly champions!

In our eyes, our mother was the strongest woman ever. She wasn’t afraid of anyone or anything. Maria was truly our Superhero.

A private family service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to The F.J. Davey Foundation http://fjdhfoundation.com/donate.html or the Alzheimer Society https://alzheimer.ca/algoma/en/home would be greatly appreciated
