Obituary for Leonide "Leona" Doleske (Horning)

February 20, 1929 – July 2, 2023, age 94. Passed away at the Sault Area Hospital post-surgery. Predeceased by husband, Guenther and son, Rainer. Survived by daughters Karin Court (Dave), Elke Jukna (Mike) and Gabriella (aka Gabi); grandchildren James, Adrian, Shaiyela (Jessa) and Skye (Adam); great-grandchildren Austin, Madalina, and Lydia; step-great-grandchildren Hope, Hayden and Darius; and great-great granddaughter Charlotte. She also leaves behind many members of the Horning and Doleske families in Europe.

Sincere thanks to Vince Ferrone for all his care and attention for many years. Also, many thanks to the staff at the Ontario Finnish Rest Home, Mauno Kaihla Koti for their care and compassion and for placing Leona in a room with a view of the pond and gardens; this gave her much pleasure and comfort.

Leona was born in Bessarabia, a German colony in south-western Russia (then Romania). She survived WWII, fleeing with her birth family and settling in Germany. In 1955 she followed her husband and emigrated to Canada on her own with their three young children and no English skills. A fourth child followed. After living in several communities in southern Ontario, the family ultimately settled in Sault Ste. Marie in 1963. Leona was an accomplished cook and baker, master seamstress and avid gardener. She also had a deep love for children, whether they were family or those of others.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation and inurnment next to Guenther in the St. Luke’s Columbarium has taken place.

Memorial donations to the Ontario Finnish Rest Home Association, Alzheimer Society, or Sault Area Hospital Foundation, in Leona’s name, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
