Obituary for Kenneth Murray Gregg

Kenneth (Ken) Murray Gregg, 87, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario passed away in his sleep of natural causes on November 13th, 2022.

Ken was born October 26th,1935 in Wingham, ON to the late Annie MacKay and the late Mervyn Lloyd (Tory) Gregg. He is survived by his two children, Mark (Michelle) and Krista (Brent). Ken was the proud and loving grandfather to his 3 grandchildren, Ryan, Reagan and Gunnar. Ken was a brother to his two sisters, Patty (late Russ) and the late Joan (late Art). Ken is remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In his younger years, many summers were spent at Inverhuron Beach enjoying family time on Lake Huron at the cottage. As a young man, Ken was a great athlete and pursued his baseball and hockey passions. He was proud to have had the opportunity to attend tryouts for the St. Louis Cardinals pitching roster. Ken also was once crowned Ontario Ping Pong champion. He began his work life sweeping the floors of the TD Bank, eventually working his way to being General Manager. He was transferred to Sault Ste. Marie to manage the local TD branch and he fell in love with the city and the surrounding area and never left. Ken left the bank to become the General Manager at Cooper’s Crane Rental, where he worked until his retirement.

Anyone who knew Ken will know of his passion for sports, especially his beloved Soo Greyhounds hockey club of the OHL, representing Sault Ste. Marie. He worked as Treasurer of the team in the 90’s and was part of the Save the Greyhounds campaign of 1991, stopping the team from being sold and moved to Detroit. The great reward was 3 straight Division Championships, 2 OHL Robertson Cups, 3 Memorial Cup appearances and 1 Memorial Cup Championship in 1993. His commitment in this regard left a lasting imprint on the community and he continued to cheer on the team every year.

Ken was always good for a tall tale, usually involving questionable quantity and size of fish caught on the latest fishing trip, or how many birdies he scored on his last round of golf. Ken was an avid sportsman and best wagon jumper ever, so his team would always win. As a father, he loved taking his family on camping trips throughout Canada and the United States, playing games (especially cards) and cheering on his kids at their hockey and baseball games. He was always the biggest kid in the room who found joy in telling stories, his grandkids, hockey, hockey and more hockey.

The family would like to thank the staff of Cedarwood Lodge for the care and compassion for Ken the last years of his life, especially with the challenges of Covid.

Cremation has taken place and a private family interment service will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the best way to honour Ken is with a memorial contribution to the Sault Area Hospital – Cancer Care Fund and by taking time to spend with family & friends sharing stories.
