Obituary for John Alexander Sanderson

SANDERSON, John

Passed away peacefully at home, with family by his side, on Saturday January 30, 2021 in his 89th year. He is survived by his wife Norma (née Hunnisett) of 57 years. Father of Jennifer Sanderson and Jamie (Crystal) Sanderson. Grandfather of Devon, Tayler, Jacob and Owen Sanderson. Son of the late Sandy and Cassie Sanderson. Brother of Liz (Bud) Rourke, late Connie (Orville) Martin, late Eleanor (Clair) Maltby, and Mary Ruth (Doug) Picoski. Brother-in-law of Jim (Mary) Hunnisett and Joe (Carole) Hunnisett. Special uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.

John moved to the Soo from Harriston, Ontario in his early 20s to start his career as an educator. This is where he met Norma, his wife of 57 years. He went on to become a principal, spending the majority of his time at F.H. Clergue. He retired at the young age of 55, just in time to enjoy spending his days with his first granddaughter, Devon. All of his life, John was involved in a variety of sports, including hockey, baseball, curling and golf. This is where “Cap’n Jack” met many of his lifelong friends, whether it was during or after the game. Papa will be greatly missed by all, but we take solace in the fact that we know he is once again reunited with many of his family and friends, enjoying an ice cold beer.

Thank you to all of the wonderful caregivers and the many great friends and family members that supported all of us through the years. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to a local children’s sporting association of your choice would be appreciated.
