Obituary for Jean Culina

Jean Culina (nee Drozda) passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital on April 16, 2021 in her 95th year after a brief battle with cancer.

Predeceased by her loving husband John. Cherished by her daughters, Brenda Chaput (Jim) and Paula McComb (Jim). Treasured by her grandchildren, Mallory Busch (Kyle), Brittany Groccia (Robert), and Sarah McComb. Proud great-grandmother of Emerik John Busch and soon-to-be-born Francesca Jean Groccia.

Jean was the daughter of the late Paul and Anne Drozda. Sister of the late Mary (late John), late Stella (late Bill, late Tony), late Olga (late Mike, late Joe), late Kalin (late Walter), and Eleanor (late Alf). Sister-in-law of the late Eva (late Louie), late Tommy (late Isabella), Annie (late Mike), late Andrew, Walter (Margaret), and late Janet. Beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Born in Husavik, Manitoba, Jean spent her early years in Winnipeg before moving to Toronto in the 1940s for war work in a munitions factory and later as a hair stylist. It was in Toronto where she met John and just after the birth of their daughter Brenda, they relocated to his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, where they raised their family together.

A wonderful cook, her family always loved her homemade cabbage rolls, perogies, and apple strudel. She was a skilled seamstress, making many outfits for herself and her children. Jean was an avid bridge player and member of the Algoma Cambrian Duplicate Bridge Club. She also loved a good game of skip-bo, hand and foot, or rummikub with her family and friends.

She spent her final 5 years at Pathways Retirement Residence, where she enjoyed many activities, especially the exercise classes. She was also an avid reader, family book club member, and curling, baseball, and golf enthusiast.

Thank you to the wonderful staff at Pathways and to all of the residents who made up her Pathways family. Thank you to the Sault Area Hospital, the doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other medical professionals who provided Jean with such wonderful care.

At Jean’s request, there will be no funeral. If desired, memorial donations to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or to ARCH (payable online or by cheque) would be appreciated.
