Obituary for Gary Edward Douglas McCormack

McCORMACK, Gary Edward Douglas –

It is with much love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary Edward Douglas McCormack of Sault Ste Marie, on June 4th, 2023, at the age of 82. Gary is predeceased by his wife, Jeannine (Cookie) and grandsons Shawn and Tyrone. He leaves behind his children Carrie McCormack (Bruce), Patricia McCormack, Gary McCormack (Rosa), Suzanne Poulin (Stephen), his grandchildren Brad, Jordan, Gary Jr, Ashley, Justin, Tavis, Kianna, Mikayla, great grandchildren Noah, Nava, Aiden, Amira (Mine), Parker, Jonah his sister MaryAnn Murphy (Calvin) and good friends Kathy and Lowell Hall.

Gary was born in Sowerby in the Algoma district and moved into the Sault as a young boy. He was raised by his grandparents, Hugh and Janet McCormack whom he loved and respected his entire life. Dad was an avid sports player and fan. He played hard and lived hard. At the age of 18 he met Jeannine and married her in 1959. They were married for 62 years, and he cared for her with love and patience until she passed last summer.

In his late teens, he worked for Swift’s meats and like most, eventually landed a job with Algoma Steel. Retiring after 35 years, at the age of 55 “Boy oh Boy, he was happy to get out of there!” Dad enjoyed his retirement spending 17 years in Mission Texas, and cruising through the Caribbean. He looked forward to gatherings with his clan in the family home, were there was always lots of food and beer to drink. Dad was a simple man, a minimalist and spent his life working to ensure his family’s security. He asked for nothing, wanted nothing, and expected much from those he loved.

Gary was a true Scotchman, with a strong independent character. He held strong convictions and stood up for what he believed to be right. He was a man of true integrity, a straight shooter and held nothing back. If he liked you, he was extremely loyal, if he didn’t like you, it wouldn’t take long to figure it out. To know dad was to love him. He came off as a hard ass, but really, he was a kind, soft hearted soul who tried to ensure he gave more than he got.

We are grateful for his influence which will remain with us forever!

At this time, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Memorial donations in Gary’s name can be made payable by cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society. Cremation entrusted through O’Sullivan Funeral Home (215 St. James Street, Sault Ste. Marie, ON, P6A 1P7, 705-759-8456, www.osullivanfuneralhome.com).
