Obituary for Gail Louise Giuliani (Giuliani)

Passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital on September 15, 2023, with her husband David Euler at her side. She was 78. She is survived by her son, Kristofer Cox, her sister Terry Hartshorne, her nieces Meredith Giuliani and Andrea Hartshorne, grand-nieces Sage Hartshorne Prouse, Isla Giuliani and Inesa Giuliani, her nephew Colin Hartshorne, and her sister-in-law Jane Giuliani. She is predeceased by her brother Gary Giuliani, her mother Ines Giuliani (nee Longarini) and her father Erzi Giuliani.

Gail was a fun-loving enthusiast canoeist who loved a trip down any river in Northern Ontario. She once said, “life is canoeing, all else is waiting.” From Toronto Harbour to the shores of Hudson Bay, she could be found in the stern or front of a canoe, paddling as long as there was daylight. She was inspired by living in nature and absorbing the beauty of the wildlife and flowers found everywhere.

Following her Bachelor of Library Science, University of Toronto, 1970, she worked in the Dawes Road Library in Toronto and the Metro Toronto Reference Library for over 22 years. She earned a Master of Library Science, University of Toronto in 1974. After moving to Thunder Bay, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at Lakehead University. She taught courses at both Lakehead and Algoma University.

When she wasn’t canoeing, or teaching, or reading Louse Penny’s books, she loved to create pottery in her studio overlooking Lake George, part of the St. Mary’s River System. She spent many hours absorbed in the art of creating beauty in clay. Clay pots, whimsical figures in clay and human faces created in clay, emerged from her talented hands.

She lived a good life and left a trail of beauty and love behind her. She will be missed.

A Celebration of Life for her will be held at the Art Gallery of Algoma (10 East Street, SSM) on October 15, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Medical care provided by Ami Shoust over a year of treatment for cancer, was full of love and compassion. Her visit to Gail’s home, usually wearing colorful artistic socks, lifted Gail’s spirit like sunshine on a cloudy day.

Thank you Dr. Spadafora, Nurse Louise, Nurse Emma, Nurses Shelly and Dana and Allison at the Sault Area Hospital for kind and compassionate care for Gail.
