Obituary for Cheryl Edith Maidra (Aelick)

Maidra, Cheryl (nee Aelick)

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Cheryl Maidra (nee Aelick). She passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side at 4:30 p.m. on November 16th, at the age of 64. Beloved wife of her loving, caring and adoring husband, Henry Maidra and proud mother of her two children, Lisa Folz (Derek) and Adam Maidra (Stevie). Cherished daughter of Barbara and the late Orion Aelick and daughter-in-law of Helmi and the late Heino Maidra. Dear sister of Micheal Aelick (Karen), Kevin Aelick (Patti), Nancy Aelick and the late Carol Aelick. Dear sister in law of Anne-Lii Kucher (Johnny), and Leif Maidra (Karen). Cheryl will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will also be deeply missed by her many dear friends in the Deaf community.

Cheryl had many hobbies. She loved puzzles, cross-stitch, bingo, playing cards, socializing with friends and family, and swimming. She was also an incredibly loving, caring and kind person who was well known for saying "I love you," giving the biggest hugs, and having a smile and laugh that made you want to smile and laugh too. She always appreciated a good joke. She also meticulously kept track of everyone's birthday and anniversary. More often than not, knowing most by memory alone. She truly cared about all of her friends and family's special life events. Cheryl was born deaf, but this was always embraced by Cheryl. She absolutely loved the deaf community. Almost nothing made her happier than having the opportunity to teach someone to sign even if it meant just learning a single word. She was always most grateful just to have the opportunity to talk to a family member, friend, or, when the opportunity presented itself, someone new.

There will be a public visitation on Monday, November 22, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at O’Sullivan Funeral Home (215 St. James St. SSM). The family has chosen to remove distancing requirements and capacity limits at the funeral home. As per this request, proof of full Covid vaccination and government issued ID will be required upon entry into the funeral home for those age 12 and over. Guests without full vaccination will not be permitted to enter as per BAO regulations. Masks are mandatory and the use of hand sanitizer is appreciated. There will be a private family service. The service will be streamed via Zoom. Please contact the family if you wish to receive the link.

A special thank you to Dr. Booth, Dr. Shoesmith, and Dr. Finger. Kari-Lynn and the Home Care Community Team (Katie, Rachel, Lesley, and Corey), the Bayshore Home Health staff (Kim, Cathy, Leo, Tamara and Amy), the CBI Health staff (Cathy), the ALS society, and especially to Lesley and Shannon, the CHS interpreters, who provided a voice for Henry and Cheryl Maidra.
