Obituary for Mark Mei Sr

MEI, (Adolfo) MARK

May 06, 1925 – February 13, 2021

After nearly 96 years, Mark has finished building his projects, critiquing the “pineapples” playing sports on TV, and teaching his kids lessons from his life experiences.

He missed his late wife, Ruth (November 8, 2020) after being apart for the first time in almost 73 years of marriage and left peacefully to be with her again, taking our love with him.

Mark was born in Sault Ste. Marie to (late) Paulo and (late) Jenny Mei. He was predeceased by his siblings - Armand (Betty), Mary Hryhorchuk (Nick), and Guido.

Left behind to miss him and honour his memory are his children: Rick (Roma) of Calgary, Mark (Nancy McBain) and Wendy (Frank) Stella of Sault Ste Marie, as well as his special sister-in-law, Anna Mei. He was also blessed with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Brianna Mei, Adam Mei, and Aricka (David) Brownless (Alexa, Lydia & Ryersen) of Calgary, Mark (Niveen) Mei (Asher, Oliver) of Keswick, Jessica Mei (Man Luu) (Sophie) of Ottawa. He will also be remembered by many nieces and nephews.

As a young man, Mark left Sault Ste Marie to serve in the Canadian Army and was stationed at Camp Borden just before World War 2 ended. He returned home and shortly thereafter he met, as he would say on many occasions, “his better half”, Ruth (Krezek). They were married in 1948 and became life-long partners who shared many adventures. Together, they built their family home and raised their family. Mark retired from Algoma Steel in 1985 but his family kept this skilful carpenter busy “supervising” the construction of their homes, decks, basement finishing, sheds, and concrete driveways. His greatest endeavour however, was to be a loving, honourable husband, a role-model father, and a fun-loving Nono....he did all that and so much more.

The family would like to express appreciation to Veterans Affairs Canada for providing various programs to Dad and Mom in recent years assisting in their day to day living requirements. We will also be eternally thankful that Dad was so well cared for in his last year by the superb staff at the Ontario Finnish Resthome. They saw to all his needs with the kindness, dignity and pampering he had known from Mom and family. We have more gratitude and respect for these special caregivers (earthly angels) than the family can express.

We are at peace knowing he has Mom as his passenger on his motorcycle, while breaking all speed limits on their next journey “together.” Dad, Papa, Nono....you are loved and missed but will never be forgotten....thanks for all that you gave us in life and for the many happy memories we will cherish.

A Celebration of Life for Mark and Ruth will be held when travelling and gathering are safe.

Memorial donations to the Ontario Finnish Resthome Foundation, the Alzheimer Society or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
